List of Characters
This list is adapted from "A Guide to Proust" found in the Modern Library edition of Time Regained.
I acknowledge a debt to Terence Kilmartin, D.J. Enright, and the editors of that edition. Who's Who in Proust is another resource and includes a Guermantes family tree. Spoiler Warning: some of the descriptions below include details revealed late in novel.

  • Dancer: "a young man in black velvet cap and hortensia-colored skirt, his cheeks chalked in red like a page from a Watteau album"; admired by Rachel to Saint-Loup's chagrin
  • Deschambre: pianist patronized by Mme Verdurin (see Pianist (young) patronized by the Verdurins)
  • Delage, Suzanne: mistakenly believed by Albertine and Mme Bontemps to be have been a childhood friend of the Narrator's
