Hairdresser at Doncières: persuades the Prince de Borodino to grant leave to Saint-Loup
Herweck, M. d': Bavarian musician introduced to the Duchesse de Guermantes by her husband
Heudicourt, Zenaïade d: cousin of the Duchesse de Guermantes: parsimonious; tells her cook "not to put on the chicken" when she learns that the Duc and Duchesse de Guermantes will not be joining M. de Bréauté and her for dinner.
Historian of the Fronde: see Pierre, M.
Howsler: the Verdurin's head coachman; victim of the machinations of Morel and the chauffeur
Howsler the elder: brother of the above; hired as a footman by the Verdurins
Hunolstein, Mme de, nicknamed "Petite" because of her enormous size

Iéna, Prince and Princesse de: friends of the Duc de Guermantes, but not of the Duchesse, who affects to despise their taste in furniture
Imbert, Mme, of Combray: Aunt Léonie instructs Françoise to go find out where she got her asparagus
Israels, Sir Rufus: Jewish financier, married to Swann's aunt; owner of a house the a Le Nôtre park that had belonged to Charlus' family
Israels, Lady: wife of the above, aunt of Swann; "being immensely rich, exercised a wide influence, and had employed it so as to ensure what no one whom she knew should be 'at home' to Odette"
